I’ve placed a "Who’s Online" widget in the left sidebar. Note that this site is not going to support private messaging. Authenticated (ie logged-in) users will be able to click through to the user profiles, though, where you’ll find a Contact tab that sends e-mail to the profile owner (privacy: this is an opt-out feature and no e-mail addresses are disclosed).
Well, no: as I pointed out, we don’t do private messaging around here. Every user has a profile that includes a tab that says "Contact" — this, however, is a mail form and uses (without disclosing it) the e-mail address that a user signed up with. Messages sent through a profile’s Contact form will be received in the recipient’s own mail in-box. Note that user profiles are only accessible to accredited and authenticated (ie logged-in) users. Also, the curmudgeons among profile owners are free to turn their Contact form off. (Maybe we should expand the Help page a bit and include such clarifications there.)
To illustrate: here’s my Contact form. You can send me e-mail through it. You won’t be able to access that link unless you’re logged into SMiELT, however.
That would be a nice addition.

Thanks, Rudolf
@Rudolf. I think that’s a great idea. I am going to rephrase your post here and put it there. Thanks, Rudolf.
