Greetings from the Grand Canyon State

Hello, everyone. I’m Dennis Oliver. I live in Arizona, a state in the
southwestern part of the U.S. Until recently, I worked as an ESL and
Developmental English teacher at Estrella Mountain Communty College,
a two-year institution located close to my home in far-west Phoenix.

I’ve been involved in online ELT since the mid-1990s, mostly in creating
WWW-based learning materials. Believe it or not, some of my early works
are still online in three places at Dave’s ESL Cafe and at one of the
Listening links at Ron-Chang Li’s ESL site. I think I still have things online
at one of Charles Kelly’s many sites, too.

For a long time, my online materials were non-dynamic teaching modules,
but around 2001 or 2002, I began to see the need for more interactive,
participatory elements. I didn’t really know how to do that, however, until
I became familiar with the outstanding contributions of two remarkable
people: first Barbara ("Bee") Dieu and later Carla Arena. Both Bee and
Carla have helped me acquire many insights that (I hope) will result in
creating materials which are collaborative, interactive, and result in both
"co-teaching" and "co-learning." I hope to learn more as a result of this seminar.

I’ll freely admit from the outset that I’ll probably do more lurking than
contributing to SMiELT—simply because I have too many things competing
for my time and energy. Even so, I will try to be as active as I can—really!

Best wishes—

Hi Dennis ,

 Nice to hear from you.

I’ve also been online for a while and convening some discussions over at the FLNW2 space which has brought about some interesting connections with SMIELT.

Hope to have you onbaord there also :)

Hi, Alexander.

It’s nice to hear from you as well—and more than nice to establish a one-on-one connection with you.

No, I haven’t been onboard at the FLNW2 space. I’d heard of it, but not actually visited it until I saw your message above. It looks like a site I’d find both informative and thought-provoking, however, so I’ll definitely go back (regularly, I hope).

At the moment, I’m stretched a bit thin, so any real involvement with FLNW2 will have to be put more or less on hold for a while.

Very best wishes—

D. O.

Hi,

I am new to this space. I think I need some guidance now how things work. I just received an email that I couldn’t trace:

Dear SMiELT participant,

We are very happy that you have decided to join us as we look at social
media and how it can be used in English Language Teaching. We hope that
you have been following the discussion at Social Media in ELT. It has been
quite lively!

As you are probably aware, the tasks for last week included opening a
wordpress blog. If you have done this, please let us know the URL so we
can join you in your discussion of the different topics we explore
throughout the session. If you haven’t done it as yet, we encourage you to
do so. The real benefit of a session like this comes from the interaction
with others, and the blogs are one of the main places we do that.

We recognize that you may not be sure about how to proceed with some of
the tools we are looking at and using in this session. If you have any
questions, please feel free to ask them on the Helpdesk forum.

We look forward to “seeing” you around more!

SMiELT Team

I have a few blogs among them via wordpress.

Hello Nellie,

Good to see you here with us and I hope you will enjoy participating in our session. As SMiELT is about Social Media, connecting and networking, we have sent mails to remind participants to add their Wordpress feed to the Dekita aggregator so that the others can import them to their personal aggregator, follow, respond/react to the posts about the different questions posed and issues that were raised this week. If you have already done so, nothing to worry about :-)

Please refer to the Primer, where you will find the schedule and links for each week.

BTW, I am not sure whether we can access posts from the Ning environment. I have the impression they are closed under a password and you must enroll to see them.
