Japan Fan

By Barbara Dieu · May 03, 2005

Caroline Caroline, or just K-ro, as people at school call this 15-year old Serbian/Brazilian blogger, says she is a kind yet proud and stubborn Taurean hooked on animation, anime, manga and is crazy for Third Eye Blind and DJ Benny Benassi . She wants to become a writer and has already published some fanfiction online.

I admire her energy, curiosity and drive for learning—she has not only been a prolific contributor to the English class blog but has also maintained and designed several personal blogs both in Portuguese and in English since the age of 13.

K-ro has recently started learning Japanese and would like to do this year’s school project on the influence of Western culture on contemporary Japanese writers. Would there be any one out there she could talk to or interview on this subject in English, French or Portuguese?

Hi Gigi and Caroline—welcome to Dekita!

Caroline, I’ve just looked at your Yaoi Supporter site, which says “Layout by Kro” in the top right corner. I’m curious: how much time and effort do you spend on the site design as opposed to the writing? How important are the looks of the site? And where did you pick up your design skills in the first place?

Fantastic blog, Caroline. I’m going to tell my students to read it. You are using English in the most natural way a a means to communicate deep concepts. Good role model!

Hello Rudolf and Rosa! I’m sorry to have kept you waiting… (I’ve been studying too much and I forgot about the existence of a computer… :P)

Rudolph, I try to balance the two (layout and writing) but I’m not being very successful since I’m not doing any of them. First because my inspiration to write seems to be on holidays (again, I’m too busy with school to write something I consider good. I’ve been revising though). As for the layout, I created it during my holidays when I had no homework… Now I’ve prepared a new one, but the images only. I haven’t done any work on the html code. Besides, before I put the new layout online, I’d like to keep this one a little longer so that I can put some music on it (I’ve always wanted to do that, and now I know how to do it…). Well, as for my design skills, I based myself on a layout made by someone else (that we can find people on the Web who provide us with different skins for free as long as we credit them), and got a look at them… I searched for information on html on the Internet, I took a look at Front Page and color schemes… And finally, I have a friend who helped me for the little details.

Now I do it all by myself. I think that the look of the site is important. I think it has to be original, so people are pleased to read the site but also because I do the layout to follow what I feel or as a complement to the ideas I have. So I think that, first: the layout completes the posting, they are two things that together can show people who I am, and second, since it’s something I did on my own, I think it’s something that I can be proud of.

Rosa, thank you for your compliment. I feel honored to have your students looking at my blog! They can contact me through my English Class Blog
