Sweet Dreams

By Aaron Campbell · May 17, 2005

candy

Amanda Lee, an EFL student from Taiwan, shares with us colorful dream she had a few days ago:

I dreamed about that I have the ability to develop something new. I invent a kind of candies which have magic power and different from each color. Red candies can make people have more power to support something that he or she decided to give up before. Orange candies can make people have more courage to solve any problem. Yellow candies can make people be more optimistic to face the real life. Green candies can make people feel relaxed if he or she is going to do something seriously. Blue candies can make people have a sweet dream and have good-humored in the morning.

I feel interested about my dream, and I think that will be a great idea to develop. If these candies really existed in the world, maybe the world will become more colorful and companionate.

Visit Amanda’s weblog, Dreams Come True, to read more of her unique thoughts.

I love a colourful and warm world, yet I question whether we should rely on candies with magic powers or some force outside ourselves to help us become persistent, optimistic, easy going and friendly.
What do you think? What are the obstacles and how can we develop these qualities?

If we had magics powers things would propably be easier, having what you need by eating a candy would be great… But, perhaps, with time, people would start by forgetting what is really is really worth it and good things would become normal things. People would forget the real value of things. Maybe running away is not the best way to become a strong person. Don’t you agree?

Well, I think your magic candies may create a fake world. Because if you use something to change your behavior,it´s like a drug. If everybody took these candies everyone would be similar.

I think there are a lot of obstacles that do not allow us to be always optimistic, friendly or persistent.Sometimes we are in bad temper, we don’t want to speak with the other persons so we become very closed. Life is like that. The world is like that.We have bad and good times. When you are in a bad mood, for instance, you can always go away, be alone, listen to music, or scream.

Well, I don’t think it’s a good idea to take a candy each time you feel bad. It’s acting against nature, you don’t get a pill to fall in love, it’s cheating ourselves. If you’re taking candy to change your mood, there is a drug called Extasy, and I don’t think we should take Extasy or we’ll become dependent. The other danger is that you may not know what’s real and what’s not. Between a drug state and a conscious state you won’t know what you do…

I like Amanda’s dream, for I think she envisions a better world, one in which people are compassionate, relaxed, and optimistic. In a troubled global society like the one we have, we ought to celebrate desires for a more humane community.

Perhaps Amanda’s candies are metaphorical and stand for ‘teachers’ and ‘guides’ in the difficult journey of life. The candies are transitional, helping people to get a taste of what those positive mental states are like, so that they feel the peaceful energy and strive to work toward making it a reality.

There is no need to invent those candies, Amanda, for they do exist and they come in many different shapes and colors. Some are people, while many others are special experiences. Have any of them found you yet?

“I do not know how dreams arise [but] I know that if we meditate on a dream sufficiently long and thoroughly – if we take it about with us and turn it over and over -something almost always comes of it.” (Carl Jung)
Can our dreams come true? Why?

I think the world would never be the same if these candies were developed. First, it would be like a drug, the persons would be using whenever they wanted to feel different.
Second, the people would not be the same, they would be faking an emotion. I want a real world with real people. Does it exist?
Maybe your dream can come true this way, but I hope it does not happen.

…We are all the artists of our dreams meanings.
I think dreams are a kind of keys to the future; dreams are the product of our brains and minds, they reflect what is going on in there. As a result, they can be usefully interpreted to give you some idea of what your inner realities are. Dreams are constantly rehearsing us for challenges and opportunities that lie around the corner in waking life.
I really hope we can find your painful candies in our gray reality.
What about believing in your great dream?!
You know what? I want to believe in it, because it could help people to live in a better way.
I recommend you a book “L’onda perfetta” written by Sergio Bambaren.
One of the most interesting sentence that you can find and that I tell me over and over again is :

Good luck!

Elena

Dear Amanda,
I see your intentions are to make from this world a better world, however this dream may revel some weakness inside of you. I’ll explain myself. I think that everyone should already have those qualities inside of him: in the world we live, people must be brave enough in order not to give up and solve their problems. Besides that, if you look inside of you, you’ll see that facing real life relaxed and in a good-humored way depends only on you.
I’m sorry, but I’m not criticizing, I’m only giving my point of view and anyone is allowed to disagree.

Hello everybody!
I have a problem and I hope someone can help me:
What’s the meaning of “dekiter”?!
It is a case of life or death (I’m joking of course!!! :-) !!)
Cheers

Hi Elena…I have no idea what the meaning of ‘dekiter’ is. Where did you hear or read that word?

Link to this comment! Elena Baldacci wrote on June 02, 2005:

Hello Aaron!
Dekiter?! My teacher wrote me an e-mail with this word but she doesn’t know its meaning; she hasn’t figuret it out either. Probably it is something refers to the “kite”. According to you, can be this a possible explanation of this mysterious word??!!
Bye and thanks for all

It’s hard to know exactly (surely at least for me) what dreams mean, or if they mean anything at all. I think that the meanings behind
dreams are personal and may be shaped by past experiences. Perhaps Amanda’s dream may mean her will (or hope) to find a new way to solve her anxiety, uncertainty and difficulty in the daily life not only for herself but also for each one of us (with look farther). In her unconscious, the colorated special candies should may symbolize a new way to find the right one to overcome any obstacle improving our lives.

Hi Elena,
“Dekiter” should have to be who posts on the site “http://dekita.org” (for example, like “moodler” for
“moodle”).
(In japanese language “dekita” means a statement of completion or finishing some act or project, often used as an interjection.)
Bye
Daniele

Well , your ideas to make the world a better place are good but I think that our life has goal! So it is importante to built our life. If you start taking those candies to have everything , they will become a drug! This will survive for what…? 6 months!! People will start wondering if the world isen´t better without those candies. So I think that your post is a wonderful idea to dream about it , but it is impossible in the real world!

Amanda!!! In a certain way I like your dream because I know that it means you want to built a better world and make everyone happy and make all the problems disappear.

Perhaps, this dream goes too far. Of course, I want a better world and equality for all of us! But eating candies when we are having problems don’t make us stronger! It just makes all easier… but then, if we are able to do all we want, would life still have a goal, an objective? I don’t think so…

Hello Amanda,
I really admired your dream as it shows great creativity and innovation. However, I guess that these magic candies would deeply transform people’s attitude, thoughts and feelings and therefore would hide our reality. In my opinion, we have to be serene, honest and determinate to face all the problems and obstacles in our lives without any “drugs”. And this way, I’m sure we will be much happier and consequently always in a good mood without the need to use your blue candies.
